Corby Hellenic
Youth Football Club was founded in 1975 by Ron McGoldrick
and Jimmy Thomson. The club started playing
competitively in 1976 in the Corby Sunday Streets
Football League and were soon amongst the honours,
achieving levels of success that led to them joining the
Kettering and District Weetabix League in
1982. Since then Hellenic have established
themselves as one of the league's leading clubs being the
first club to win both the County Under 16's and Under 14's Cups.
Hellenic
can also boast of being awarded the winners of the
Weetabix League's 'Chairman's Cup' (1997/98), an award given for outstanding
club performance on and off the pitch.
Furthermore, the current Northants County Under 18
squad, which has just reached the final of the County
Championships for the first time in 25 years, boasts six
ex Hellenic players.
Over
the years, Corby Hellenic have produced many fine
players, with Eddie McGoldrick, (ex Arsenal and Republic
of Ireland) Lee Glover, (ex Nottingham Forest and
Scotland Under 21) and the late David Longhurst
(Nottingham Forest and York City) being perhaps the
most famous of them... so far.
Corby Hellenic have also formed footballing links all
over the UK and as far a-field as Holland with Dutch club
Lag Zwalauve, with whom they have been involved in
'Exchange' visits for the past 14 years.
Today,
Hellenic are one of Northamptonshires leading youth
football clubs providing footballing opportunities for
boys aged from 5 to 16 years of age.
